In addition to centrally run courses we also offer a wide-range of bespoke music support for staff that can be held either in the host school or at our well equipped Manygates Music Centre.

All training takes place at Manygates Music Centre unless otherwise stated. Most courses are booked the Wakefield Traded Services on the links below except for those run by Charanga.

 

Tuesday 23rd April 2024 (4 – 5.30pm) – How to Start a Ukulele Band

Do you want a school ukulele band but don’t know where to start? Do you need some new motivating pieces and ideas for a group you already have? Then this course is for you!
This practical session will run through the basics of ukulele playing using progressive accessible original pieces and resources written by Phil Needham. The course also supports the expectations of the new National Plan for Music Education that requires every school to run a regular instrumental ensemble and choir. Tuesday 30th April & Tuesday 4th June 2024 (4pm – 5.30pm) – Help! I’ve Got to Teach Music (Ideal for ECT’s)

This practical course is an excellent introduction to what a good inclusive music should look like in the classroom and is ideal for ECTs and teachers that want to refresh their practice. The session aims to build the confidence of teaching music in the Primary School through accessible musical activities that are suitable for all teachers including those with little musical experience. Tuesday 14th May 2024 (4 – 5.30pm) – Primary Music Zoom Room Twilight (Summer)

Ofsted findings show that the quality of subject leadership in music was a vital factor in improving provision and with an increased focus on a broad and balanced curriculum these sessions are invaluable for Music Leaders With musical opportunities, singing and instrumental programmes now a feature in most schools, successful co-ordination of this exciting and essential part of the curriculum has never been so important. These termly online music twilights will complement the practical face to face network sessions delivered at Manygates. They will give guidance, offer support and expertise and give the opportunity for colleagues to share good practice and discuss current issues in music education. Monday 10th June 2024 (1 – 4pm) – Primary Music Network Meeting (Summer)

Ofsted findings show that the quality of subject leadership in music was a vital factor in improving provision and with an increased focus on a broad and balanced curriculum these sessions are invaluable for Music Leaders. With musical opportunities, singing and instrumental programmes now a feature in most schools, successful co-ordination of this exciting and essential part of the curriculum has never been so important. It would therefore be beneficial if the same person/s attends each term as there is an element of developmental work that carries throughout the year. Excellent feedback over the years from teachers and Head teachers show that these sessions are highly valued and an important line of support for the development of music within school. These termly face to face network CPD meetings will give guidance, share good practice and offer support, expertise and direction to increase opportunities and standards of music in school and deliver the ambitions of the National Plan for Music Education. Monday 17th June 2024 (1 – 4pm) – Move to the Beat with Funky Feet! EYFS/KS1

Funky FEET is a wonderful collection of original musical activities and songs created by Wakefield Music Services. The activities encourage language skills, help to develop co-ordination, improve speaking and listening skills and much more. This course will further explore this tried and tested resource that has been used in many EYFS and KS1 settings up and down the country. Valuable learning takes place through music, and the activities in the course and accompanying resource provide a carefully structured approach enabling children to take part in a wide range of musical experiences. Monday 24th June 2024 (1 – 4pm) – An Introduction to Music Tech, Apps and iPads in the Classroom

This course will look at how music technology, smart devices and apps can really enhance the music curriculum in the primary classroom. Young people increasingly use digital tools to support their learning and for some can be a valuable way into creative music making.

This practical ‘hands on’ session will look at a variety of apps and digital tools suitable for use in the music classroom and will explore how music technology can:

  • Support and enhance the delivery of the music curriculum
  • Be a powerful tool to encourage learning at home and out of the lesson
  • Help with the assessment process and the recording of musical progression
  • Produce professional results through apps such as ‘Garage Band’
  • Excite, engage and remove barriers for those young people with additional needs
  • Create new and different performance opportunities

Monday 19th February 2024 – Introduction to Charanga Musical School (ideal for those new to Charanga)

We’ll start by explaining the layout of the Musical School programme before moving on to the fantastic learning resources. As well as exploring the Original Scheme lessons and supporting documents, we’ll show the wide range of materials available in the Freestyle, Instruments, Sing and special needs areas. There’s music for every moment and everybody!

Monday 22nd April 2024 – First Steps of Music Technology using Charanga

How to use Charanga Musical School apps effectively and creatively. A thorough overview of the composition and creative technology apps such as Quickbeats and YuStudio. We’ll consider ways to use these apps either within the scheme or as stand-alone resources. We will also look at sharing these with pupils so they are able to continue creating and recording music wherever they are.
